This half-fiend appeared in time to finish the last of the babaus that attacked the party in the Ancient Vault the day after Alek Tercival was murdered by Nabthatoron. He briefly explains that he was seeking their help in completing the “Test of the Smoking Eye” on a layer of the Abyss called Occipitus. If the PCs can pass the Test, he said, they could cleanse the plane of evil and win a great victory for the forces of good. In addition, Kaurophon offered them a magical way out of their predicament, even if it proved to be a lateral move, placing them in the midst of a haunted demonic plane.

Kaurophon has proved a reliable and knowledgeable ally upon Occipitus, saving Bransen’s life in the party’s first encounter and later helping defeat the retriever before it could finish off Kort. He was instrumental in helping the party pass the first two parts of the Test of the Smoking Eye, and he seemed almost eager as the group focused on getting to the final part, located in the Skull at the center of the layer.

During the final part of the Test of the Smoking Eye, Kaurophon eagerly turned on the party, more than willing to sacrifice his allies to the flames in order to empower himself. Kort the Grey’s self-sacrifice sent the half-fiend into a mindless rage, and all thoughts of self-preservation fled. This led to his downfall as Jarvyk dragged him out of the air and grappled him, allowing Karamus to make the killing blow.
