The Shackled City
The party met Kaurophon while stranded in an unknown desert far to the west of Cauldron. He struck a bargain with them to assist him in passing what he called the Test of the Smoking Eye, in order to gain control of a layer of the Abyss known as Occipitus. The layer’s former ruler, a demon prince called Adimarchus was the architect of the test, which was intended to screen would be successors.
Kaurophon has already proven his word in protecting the party while on Occipitus by saving Bransen’s life during the first combat encounter upon the plane. He remained impatient to proceed with the tests, disgruntled by every aside.
When the party encountered Saureya, the angel outed one of Kaurophon’s earlier lies regarding the first part of the Test. He’d never actually battled the bebilith, but he had been told (by Saureya) that choosing to fight the evil outsider had been the way to success.
In the Test of Sacrifice, Kaurophon was more than willing to sacrifice his allies to the plasma geyser, but Kort was willing to sacrifice himself, and got it done faster. In a rage, thoughts of survival fled his mind, and he tried only to use his magic to shove members of the Silver Phoenix into the flames. It proved to be his undoing, as Jarvyk dragged him down to the ground with a grappling hook, allowing Karamus to land the killing blow.
